A complete system for heavy freight wagons

The yard is located next to a large steelworks and handles very heavy freight wagons every day, with high demands on safety, reliability and precision. As part of the yard's modernisation, DECEL supplied a complete system:

  • spiral retarders in the track
  • a compressor plant
  • a yard control system
  • installation and commissioning on site

Results after a year in service

Tests were carried out under real operating conditions to confirm that the system meets the operator's requirements. The results show stable, reliable operation, and the yard has gained better control over its shunting processes.

From brake shoes to automated braking

The yard still relies heavily on the traditional method of placing brake shoes (skids) on the rail to control wagon speed. The method is labour intensive and puts staff close to rolling wagons, which carries significant safety risks. With DECEL's automated braking system, the risk of injury to staff and damage to goods and infrastructure is reduced. Read how retarders work.

Less wear and lower maintenance costs

Controlled braking gives smoother shunting, fewer hard impacts between wagons and less mechanical wear on wagons, rails and other yard equipment. Over time this lowers maintenance costs.

A milestone in Central Asia

The project is an important milestone in DECEL's growth in Central Asia. Investment in rail infrastructure in the region is increasing, and the need for modern, safe and efficient shunting technology is growing fast. Read also: DECEL at the EU Global Gateway summit in Brussels.

Testing under real operating conditions is essential to demonstrate how our systems perform. The results from the yard in Kazakhstan confirm that our technology works very well even in demanding environments with extremely heavy traffic. We see Central Asia as a strategically important market, and this project is an important step in our continued expansion.

What did DECEL supply to the yard in Kazakhstan?

Spiral retarders, a compressor plant, a yard control system, and installation and commissioning on site.

Why replace brake shoes with retarders?

Brake shoes require staff to work close to rolling wagons. Retarders brake the wagons automatically in the track, removing that risk and giving more even speeds and less wear.

How long has the system been in operation?

Just over a year under real operating conditions, handling heavy freight wagons from a nearby steelworks.
