DECEL's role
Dimensioning, manufacturing, delivery, pneumatic control of the stands, technical support and installation assistance
Several of Finland's railway lines meet in Tampere, and in the Viinikka area freight wagons are sorted onward to their destinations. Here DECEL delivered one of its largest retarder projects in the Nordics: 1,642 retarders with pneumatic control of the stands. The result is a yard where the speed of every wagon can be actively managed throughout the shunting process, in service since 1980.
Background: a hub with intense traffic
Tampere is one of Finland's most important junction stations and a central marshalling yard for freight. Freight and passenger trains meet here, and the shunting function matters to the entire national transport system. VR needed a robust, high-capacity solution that could handle large freight flows with high safety and precision.
DECEL was chosen for its specialist expertise in retarders, dimensioning and continuous speed control. The scale of the project called for a solution with high technical reliability and a long service life.

One of DECEL's largest projects in the Nordics
In service since 1980
Equipped in three stages, 1980, 1994 and 1997
All stands pneumatically controlled for active braking
Many tracks, many retarders, one system
The biggest challenge was scale. A very large number of retarders had to be dimensioned and installed in a complex facility, and the system needed to provide stable speed control across many tracks at once. The retarders also had to work together with pneumatically controlled stands to deliver the right braking force in different operating modes. Without reliable speed control, safety, capacity and punctuality would have suffered in a yard the whole country's freight traffic depends on.
Pneumatically controlled stands for active control
The project began with dimensioning based on the yard's layout, traffic flows and the need for controllable speed. DECEL then manufactured and supplied the retarders along with the equipment for pneumatic control of the stands. The first stage covered 24 classification tracks and entered service in 1980. The yard was later extended with six more classification tracks in 1994 and 1997, also equipped with DECEL retarders.
The key technical choice was the pneumatic control itself. It makes it possible to actively manage how the retarders operate and adjust the braking force as needed, rather than letting the retarders act passively. In a large, heavily trafficked yard, that makes a real difference. DECEL provided technical support and installation assistance through to commissioning.
Controlled shunting at scale
The installation was completed and the yard was commissioned as planned. Tampere gained a very extensive and reliable braking system where freight wagons are handled safely and predictably. For VR, that means a stable and controllable shunting function in everyday operation, in a yard of central importance to the Finnish railway system.

“For us, sustainability is not only about new technology. It is about designing solutions that operate reliably for decades, require minimal maintenance, and help reduce wear and damage to rolling stock and rail infrastructure. By improving operational efficiency and lowering life-cycle costs, we contribute to more sustainable rail yard operations."
