DECEL's role
Dimensioning, manufacturing, delivery, technical support and installation assistance
In Helsingborg, rail, an intermodal terminal and a port meet in the same place. Freight trains are reassembled here for onward transport, and every wagon has to roll onto the right track at the right speed. DECEL designed, manufactured and supplied 850 retarders for the marshalling yard, where they have been in service since 1974 in a facility that still plays a central role in the region's freight traffic.
Background: large freight flows demand control
Helsingborg's marshalling yard is part of a wider logistics area connected to rail, an intermodal terminal and port operations. That combination places high demands on capacity, safety and reliability. The client wanted a yard where wagon speeds could be controlled evenly and predictably, day after day, even when freight volumes are high.
DECEL was chosen for its specialist expertise in retarders and continuous speed control.

The right braking force in a demanding environment
The main challenge was to dimension a braking system that provided safe speed control across 24 classification tracks in a facility in continuous use. Helsingborg also handles shipments that call for particular risk awareness, which made reliable braking an absolute requirement. Had speed control not worked, shunting would have become less predictable, with consequences for both safety and capacity.
850 retarders tailored to the yard
The work began with dimensioning based on the yard's layout, track functions and the need for controlled speed. One key decision was to equip the yard with a large number of retarders, so that speed is managed evenly throughout the shunting process rather than at a few isolated points. DECEL manufactured and supplied the 850 retarders and provided technical support and installation assistance during mounting.
Safe shunting in a strategic hub
The installation was completed and the yard was commissioned as planned. The result is a marshalling yard where freight wagons are handled at controlled speed with high reliability, still in service more than 50 years later. For Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, this means efficient flows and a lower risk of disruptions in a hub that matters to the logistics of the entire region.

“For us, sustainability is not only about new technology. It is about designing solutions that operate reliably for decades, require minimal maintenance, and help reduce wear and damage to rolling stock and rail infrastructure. By improving operational efficiency and lowering life-cycle costs, we contribute to more sustainable rail yard operations."
